| 01.Feb.2008 | To: block2008:; Date: January 17, 2008 From: Nelson Weiderman Subject: Block Island Race Week 2008 -- Update #0 This is being sent to Fleet #14 members and J/105 Class members who have recently sailed in or expressed interest in Block Island Race Week. If you want to be removed from this mailing list, please let me know. For those planning to attend in 2008, I would just like to bring to your attention that they are now taking housing reservations and that they will start taking ferry reservations on January 21. There's always a rush for ferry reservations on the first day. You'll hear from me again in about a month, when I'll ask who's in and who's out. We had 24 boats in 2007 and are looking for more in 2008. Cheers, Nelson |

| 25.Mar.2008 | To: block2008:; From: Nelson Weiderman Subject: Block Island Race Week 2008 -- Update #1 Sorry I'm so late in getting this out. I'd like to firm up who is coming. My current list is here: http://j105.org/BIRW2008/entries.php It is based on feedback I've received so far with 11 confirmed (80%+ probability) and another 12 possible or likely. I only have one newbie on the list, so if you know of anybody coming for the first time, please let me know. I have these as the "confirmed" boats: DRAGONFLY, ECLIPSE, GHOST, JOYSEA, KIMA, MOPELIA, MORNING GLORY, POWER PLAY, SAVASANA, TENACIOUS, TWO FEATHERS. Here are those I feel are likely or probably based on past attendance: ANDIAMO, BAT IV, INSTANT KARMA, JADED, JATO, KETCHUPLESS, RIGADOON, ROE RAGE, SHAKEDOWN, STEELAWAY, VMAX, and WOODY. I've heard in the negative from these boats: ARBITRAGE , COLTRANE, KINCSEM, SEA SHADOW If you are in the second category (or if there are mistakes in the other categories), please let me know your intentions. I've also started our 2008 page here: http://j105.org/racing/birw.php More to come over the coming weeks. Cheers, Nelson |

| 08.Apr.2008 | To: Block2008; From: Nelson Weiderman Subject: Block Island Race Week 2008 -- Update #2 There's been some movement, but we're still at 12 confirmed and 8 more possible or likely. My current list is here: http://j105.org/BIRW2008/entries.php Would love to hear from the owners in the middle group. I have these as the "confirmed" boats: BAT IV, DRAGONFLY, ECLIPSE, JOYSEA, KIMA, MOPELIA, MORNING GLORY, POWER PLAY, SAVASANA, TENACIOUS, TWO FEATHERS, WOODY. Here are those I feel are likely or probably based on past attendance: JADED, JATO, KETCHUPLESS, RIGADOON, ROE RAGE, SHAKEDOWN, STEELAWAY, and VMAX. I've heard in the negative from these boats: ANDIAMO, ARBITRAGE , COLTRANE, GHOST, KINCSEM, SEA SHADOW A few important notes about 2008: 1. We will be sailing by the 2008 Rules, so that means you will need a weight certificate for your boat. No longer will we be using float lines for weight equalization. 2. You can register on-line at http://blockislandraceweek.org/. 3. Jim Johnstone has offered to run some on-the-water coaching or a clinic on Saturday and/or Sunday. Please contact Jim directly at jimj@jboats.com. 4. Off Soundings is running its spring race series on Friday and Saturday with feeder race from Westerly to Block Island on Saturday. Please contact Bill Loweth (lowethwa@gmail.com) for more information. Here's the scoop. http://offsoundings.org/pdffiles/2008/BIRW2008.pdf Here's the link to our BIRW 2008 page: http://j105.org/racing/birw.php More to come over the coming weeks. Cheers, Nelson |

| 30.Apr.2008 | To: block2008: Subject: Block Island Race Week 2008 -- Update #3 We're still holding at a dozen boats. There must be more of you planning to attend! Here's the current list: BAT IV, DRAGONFLY, ECLIPSE, JOYSEA, KIMA, MOPELIA, MORNING GLORY, POWER PLAY, SAVASANA, TENACIOUS, TWO FEATHERS, WOODY. If you are planning to sail the Halfway Rock Regatta (June 7-8) or the NYYC Anniversary (June 14-15), please let me know so I can advise those organizers. The BIRW Regatta website is accepting on-line registrations here: http://blockislandraceweek.org/register.php Note that they have a crew finder section if you are needing crew. Currently 14 people have submitted credentials. Also, the crew and sail declarations are now up on our Regatta page here: http://j105.org/racing/birw.php They are set up as forms that you can easily fill in. If you log in first, you will see all the sails that are currently in your inventory (at least the ones that your sail maker has sent us the registrations for). Finally, if you want inspections, we need some volunteers. If you want a party, we need some other volunteers. Happy to answer questions. Cheers, Nelson |

| 09.Jun.2008 | To: block2008: From: Nelson Weiderman Subject: Block Island Race Week 2008 -- Update #5 (and last) Well we've had a few changes in the names, but I'm still expecting a dozen boats. But among these dozen, we have 50 previous BIRWs. The only one I've listed as a "newbie" is POWERPLAY, but even she was here in her previous incarnation as KIMA and the co-skipper is Bruce Stone, who has a couple of BIRWs under his belt. We welcome back GHOST who is a late joiner with Ken C. sailing his J/105 instead of that "other boat." Here are the boats that have said they will be there: BAT IV, DRAGONFLY, ECLIPSE, GHOST, JATO, JOYSEA, KIMA, MORNING GLORY, POWER PLAY, SAVASANA, TWO FEATHERS, WOODY. Checking the official blockislandraceweek.org entry list, I only see seven boats, but I'm not sure how up-to-date that entry list is. My list shows that only four boats have completed their declarations here: http://j105.org/racing/birw.php Please do that today if you have not already done so. Since there are fewer boats and no volunteers and no true newbies, this will be a lower-key regatta than in previous years, but nevertheless, you are responsible for knowing all the one-design rules. Please go here for the one page summary of the most important rules: http://j105.org/racing/rules.php See you all on the water, Nelson |
