This year’s 289.0nm Chicago Mackinac Race saw the fleet start in light to medium southeasterly winds and bright sunshine. By 2:00 pm, all boats were on their way north up to Mackinac Island. It ended up being a fast, thrilling race. Most of the fleet missed the Sunday AM storms. However, no one missed those on Saturday late evening, with lightning, squalls and rain. The J/105 fleet had 14 boats, growing by six boats over last year. Winning was Mark Fruin’s NYCTOSAUR by nearly an hour. Second went to class veteran Clark Pellet’s SEALARK, followed in third by Mark Denuyl’s GOOD LOOKIN. The balance of the top five included John Kalanik’s PURA VIDA in fourth and Jon Weglarz’s THE ASYLUM in fifth. Winning 16-boat Section 7 division was the modified J/105 SLEEPER, sailed by Joe Kurta from NEKA SAILING of Long Island, NY.
